Salar de Uyuni

About 40 000 years ago there was a lake where the desert is today, Minchin. When the lake dried in, it left behind two big lakes and two big deserts of salt, Salar de Coipasa and the biggest Salar de Uyuni.

Salar de Uyuni lies in the department of Potosí and Oruro in Bolivia, and you find it about 3650 meters above sea level. Salar de Uyuni is the biggest desert of salt in the whole world. It has a surface of 10 583 km², and is from 2 to 80 meters deep. The desert it said to consist of 10 billions tonns of salt. Less then 25 000 of this is produced per year.

From june until december the desert is dry, and it is possible to drive on the desert. This is therefore a time when a lot of tourists come to see the desert. The isolatet island Isla Del Pescado is one of several islands. Many tourists come here. It has also been built a hotel og salt in the middel of the desert.
